AI in Decision-Making Processes
At the 15th Austrian IT and Consulting Day 2017, the future topic of Artificial Intelligence was in the spotlight. In cooperation with three companies, an interactive workshop was created in Vienna’s Hofburg, based on a study that remains relevant today. Driven by technological developments such as Large Language Models (LLM) and Generative AI, the key questions of the study can now be re-evaluated.
What role do data play in corporate decision-making?
Data were already in 2017—and remain today—a central foundation for well-informed decisions. They make it possible to identify complex interconnections, develop viable strategies, and detect potential risks early. With the advancement of AI technologies, data-driven analyses are more accessible than ever before. At the same time, the responsibility to use these possibilities thoughtfully is growing. What matters is not only the technical use, but also the ability to interpret data correctly. This also includes critical reflection on potential biases.

How do morality and ethics influence automated decisions?
Morality and ethics play a central role in ensuring that automated processes are fair, transparent, and responsible. They serve as a corrective to discrimination, algorithmic bias, and unintended societal consequences of AI systems. Already in 2017, leading research institutions, especially in the USA such as MIT, were aware that AI-driven decision-making without an ethical framework could lead to moral dilemmas. A good example are autonomous driving systems, whose decisions in critical situations may determine matters of life and death.

What role does sociocracy play in the decision-making process?
Sociocracy promotes equal participation, clear roles, and transparent decisions. It strengthens trust, accelerates processes, and combines humanity with efficiency. From a sociocratic perspective, AI is not a substitute for human judgment but a tool for collective decision-making. Ideally, a new balance emerges in which technology does not take control but supports us through fair and objective decision-making processes. Participation remains a central value—even in an automated world.
